About the concert

  • Emiliano Sampaio Meretrio - Brazilian Night

Meretrio stands as a remarkable embodiment of an enduring musical ensemble. Since its inception in 2004, the band has continuously thrilled its audience with its commitment to creating innovative musical paths. Over the years, they have created ten different albums, each of which is an exploration of the complex musical connection these three Brazilian musicians share.

In 2024, Meretrio will reach an important milestone by completing her 11th birthday. Release the album and celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band. The upcoming album promises to present original compositions inspired by the Afro-Brazilian musical traditions and skillfully interwoven with elements of chamber music and jazz. The band’s tonal diversity is of high quality, thanks to their diverse instrumentation – three musicians master live drums, percussion, bass, guitar, trombone and a loop machine, thus expanding the realm of tonal possibilities.

In recent years, Meretrio has ventured into joint ventures and produced two albums in collaboration with the renowned flutist and saxophonist Henrich von Kalnein from the Jazz Big Band Graz: "Live im Birds Eye" and "Passagem".

In 2021, Meretrio released an album entirely dedicated to Brazilian folk music, with a particular focus on the genre "Choro". This genre, which is in the 19th century. Originated in Brazil in the 19th century, it is considered the originator of Brazilian city music, and Meretrio’s interpretation earned them a nomination from German record critics.

Her 2016 publication, "Óbvio," garnered wide recognition and received a four-star rating from Downbeat Magazine. In 2019, the trio released a double album entitled "Music for small and large ensembles".

Her latest works have resonated with critics and enthusiasts alike, earning the prestigious title of "Best Albums of 2017" by Downbeat Magazine.

"Emiliano sampaio is simply a wonderfully gifted musician! His talent is clearly represented on these new recordings, going back to his Brazilian roots. This is certainly a recording to add to your library!"

Jiggs Whigham, Former Bujazzo Conductor (2020)

"Meretrio digs deep into Brazilian Choro repertoire and in the process brings a completely fresh and beautiful sound." Paulo Morello, Guitar Prof. Jazz Institut Berlin (2020)

„Meretrio is a cohesive unit that favours a tight, groove-oriented sound, but one that allows for immense freedom within that space.” Brian Zimmerman, Downbeat Magazin (2017)
