Denied Square Quintet

Denied Square Quintet
  • Friederike Bartel – saxophone, composition
  • Georg Demel - Trumpet
  • Olga Reznichenko – Piano
  • Carl Wittig – double bass

André van der Heide – drums

The Denied Square Quintet mainly performs pieces by the talented saxophonist Friederike Bartel. This creates complex rhythmic and harmonic structures that constantly break the boundaries of conventional music. Although the compositions play a decisive role within the quintet, there is also plenty of room for spontaneous improvisation and free musical interaction.

Friederike Bartel completed her musical education in Weimar and London, where she has devoted herself to composing in particular in the last two years. With this band she now realizes her own musical concept.

Georg Demel, who studied jazz trumpets in Leipzig and Lucerne, among others with Nils Wogram, is another member of the ensemble. It also includes Olga Reznichenko and Carl Wittig, who perfected their instruments, piano and double bass, in Leipzig. Carl also studied in Lucerne and is a member of the renowned BuJazzo. The drummer André van der Heide from Berlin studied his drums in Weimar and Maastricht and is involved in various musical projects.

All band members are extremely active in both the German and international jazz and music scene and have created a unique formation with this quintet.
