  • Paul Brändle Trio – Paul, Rick and River (Squama, 2023)

The Paul Brändle Trio is a modern jazz formation around the Munich guitarist and bandleader Paul Brändle (*1992). Together with the American drummer Richard “Rick” Hollander and the Amsterdam-based bassist River Adomeit, a classically cast jazz trio was created with a direct, unpretentious sound – melodic, finely nuanced and deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.

The three musicians have been playing together in different constellations for years – often across continents. The new release, Paul, Rick and River, documents the trio’s current state of sound and deliberately refrains from stylistic gimmicks in favor of a clear, focused expression.

Rick Hollander, who has been based in Munich for over 30 years, belongs to the experienced American jazz generation. River Adomeit originally came on a spontaneous tour – as an assistant to a sick bassist – and has been a permanent part of the cast ever since.

The repertoire of the recording consists of original compositions by Brändle (“Homecoming”, “Fab”, “Awake”), a composition by Rick Hollander (“As If There Were Simple Times”) and three jazz standards (“Round Midnight”, “Moonlight in Vermont”, “A Flower Is a Lonesome Thing”).

The sound of the trio is oriented more towards classical role models such as Grant Green or the early Pat Metheny Trio and thus clearly stands out from Brändle's work with the band Fazer. At the same time, the claim to further development and contemporary interpretation remains central – in line with the progressive legacy of jazz.
