Johann Greve Quartett

Johann Greve (*2001) is a double bass player and composer from Lower Saxony. Since he moved to Berlin in 2019, he has worked as a sideman on a wide variety of projects and established himself in the young Berlin jazz scene. In March 2024 he recorded material with his quartet for his debut album, which was released on 27 March. June 2025 will be released on YEW Records. Johann Greve’s compositions are shaped by spirituality and the modern Berlin music scene.
The pieces serve primarily as a foundation for improvisation - with the aim of always generating a strong energy in the moment and on stage.
It is not a matter of stringing together virtuosic individual performances, but all participants go to the expressive limit without standing in each other’s way, and Greve himself forms the spine of the whole with his heavy bass. It would be an understatement to listen. What Johann Greve hears here is extremely exciting and makes you want much more.
