Paul Bernewitz - Solopiano

For me, Soloklavier was and is the starting point of my musical journey. It is the basis. It is the most beautiful form of introspection in my eyes. Improvisation is precisely that lucid state of freedom that gives space to all emotions, to beautiful and heavy memories and especially to visions. It is the most fluid form of communicating sensation musically. Playing the piano is playing music, making music, “creating” music. Music is universal. Clearly like a body language, but, let’s pay attention to it, ambiguous in what it says.
It is reflected in us and is as fleeting as a fragrance that is lost or burns forever in our memories. I do not feel that playing the piano is a state of solitude, because with music it disappears – its sound gives us the support and protection to enter our inner world and walk through it like a park. Sometimes the darkness that breaks in prevents us from seeing where we are going in detail. Then we have only one thing left: to trust. Playing the piano that makes loneliness disappear lives on trust. It is a choral common, a multitude of voices, a collective horizontality.
And as in life, which costs us strength and effort, I play with my instrument of expression against fading. Playing the piano is a form of life. Improvising pianists use this wonderful musical language because it has tremendous power. It does not exhaust itself and is full of codes. I love to speak through them. Free. Honestly. Ambiguous.
