Paul Walke Trio

The trio is dedicated to compositions and arrangements by Paul Walke. Gentle, simple melodies tell stories of new beginnings, friendship and moments of happiness, as well as farewell, longing and heartbreak, sometimes melancholy and minimalist, sometimes aggressive and almost rocky.

The three friends cultivate their love for swinging music in intimate interaction as well as groove-oriented styles. What emerges is a modern interpretation of the guitar trio, which is reminiscent of music from the latitudes between the labels ECM and Blue Note.

Their repertoire further expands the band with arrangements of cherished jazz standards and compositions of their musical role models, bridges are built between tradition and modernity, pieces by Bill Frisell go hand in hand with hymns by Thelonius Monk and Ornette Coleman.

Paul Walke and Malte Wiest, who already knew each other from the LJJO Hessen band “Kicks’n’Sticks”, found after a short search a musically like-minded person in Niklas Schumacher.

All three are studying their instrument in the field of jazz at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz. In May 2021, the trio received the project scholarship of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate; since November 2021, the three musicians are supported by Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Frankfurt am Main e.V.
