Tatiana Nova is a Russian jazz singer and composer who lives in Basel. Born in Moscow in 1995, she discovered her love for jazz at the age of 11 at a state music school in Moscow. After my classical choir years, this was a new world for me - without any specifications. I found the playful approach much freer. I was really challenged to discover my vocal colors and live out songs all over again.“ She enjoyed it so much that she was on stage with a big band shortly afterwards.

On the advice of her music teachers, Tatiana was trained as a choir director at a state music college at the age of 15. Not only did I learn a lot about music, but also about music. Leadership and proper communication - that has shaped me a lot and helps me in my collaborations to this day. During her studies she became a soloist in the renowned Moscow Jazz Dance Orchestra. At the age of 19 she moved to Dresden, learned German and applied for jazz/rock/pop singing at the music academy "Carl Maria von Weber".

Although the university offered only two places at the time, it passed the entrance exam straight away. Under the direction of Prof. Céline Rudolph was able to experiment a lot with Tatiana and reinvent herself - not least in various projects. So she became part of the vocal ensemble of the Bundesjazzorchester, founded a duo with Timo Bautsch, who is known for his extraordinary percussive guitar playing, and sings “Wind Vessel” in the project of the Brazilian drummer João Raineri.

“I love working with international artists and see myself as a travelling musician.” Tatiana has performed in Canada, Israel, USA, Russia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Kazakhstan and Spain.

In October 2019 she completed her Bachelor of Music at the “Carl Maria von Weber” University in Dresden and released her debut EP “PLANETA” (Russian for Planet). With my first EP, I want to show my versatility. On the basis of jazz, I experimented with influences of Neo Soul, RnB and Pop.The name of the EP came from the idea: We humans are like planets, because it is impossible to capture a person with all its facets at the same time. While one side is lit, the other is already in the shadow. “This EP is a snapshot of my currently lit page before I spin further...”

After being selected to become part of the Focusyear program led by Wolfgang Muthspiel in September 2020, she remained in Basel, Switzerland to study for a master’s degree at the Jazz Campus. With the help of her professors Guillermo Klein and Ambrose Akinmusire, she immerses herself in the composition. She is also working on her own compositions for an upcoming album with “No Pressure” – a band of six musicians from Germany, Russia, France and Denmark who have joined forces to form a European sound community.

They do not try to fit into certain genres or “boxes”, but play original music in the direction of “multilingual jazz”.
