Paula Bilá is one of the most powerful voices Spain has produced in recent years. Deeply rooted in the flamenco of Andalusia, her homeland, she writes, plays and sings music that moves freely between different genres, but always with a clear reference to the musical tradition of her homeland. Since moving to Amsterdam in 2021, she has increasingly devoted herself to traditional Latin American music, which she presents in unconventional arrangements, accompanied by a band that seems like a peculiar choice at first glance.
Der Ursprung des LEANING IN Undergrounds: Als Gitarrist Linus Eppinger die Release-Tour für sein Debütalbum “Leaning In” geplant hatte, stand er vor einem Problem. Er hatte eine ganze Reihe Auftritte gebucht, die nicht den Standards der Band entsprachen, mit der er auf Tour gehen würde. Dies führte dazu, dass die Tour aufgeteilt wurde – in der ersten Hälfte wurden alle prestigeträchtigen Auftritte in prestigeträchtiger Besetzung absolviert, für die zweite Hälfte, die Underground-Tour, wurde die Rhythmusgruppe durch jüngere Kollegen ersetzt. Die Band behauptete im Anschluss an die Tour selbstbewusst ihre Außenseiterposition und beschloss, bei diesem Namen zu bleiben – The LEANING IN Underground.
Pianist Nicolai Daneck und Gitarrist Linus Eppinger haben bereits in ihrer Jugend im Freiburger Schüler Jazz Orchester zusammengespielt. Mit Bassist Doug Weiss und Schlagzeuger Jorge Rossy haben sie 2021 ihr gemeinsames Debüt “Leaning In” aufgenommen, das für eine “beispiellose musikalische Reife” (jazzism) gelobt wurde. Bassist Ties Laarakker besitzt die seltene Gabe, in zwei Disziplinen zu brillieren. So ist er Doktor der Mathematik und hat über “Universality in enumerative geometry and Vafa-Witten theory” promoviert. Des weiteren ist er ein herausragender Kontrabassist. Peter Primus Frosch ist einer der besten Jazz Schlagzeuger Europas, seine nicht zu bändigende Energie und unglaubliche technische Beherrschung seines Instruments, haben ihm zu weltweiter Bekanntheit verholfen.
The Latin American pieces, mostly Bolero’s, the LEANING IN Underground interprets entirely in the sense of the Latin Jazz conception of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers: with a sense of melody and atmosphere of the piece, but without the already hopeless attempt to copy the rhythm and groove of the Latin American masters – and accordingly anything but shy to impose their own stamp on Bolero’s and Latin Jazz. Their album “En Español” will be released in December 2024.
