The Ancestral Jazz Project

The Ancestral Jazz Project

The Ancestral Jazz Project A Musical Concept Conceived & Headlined by Portia Sibiya The Ancestral Jazz Project is not merely a band, but a deliberate musical concept designed to bridge the spiritual heritage of South African jazz with contemporary innovation. Conceived and headlined by commanding bass guitarist and composer Portia Sibiya, the project serves as a canvas for her artistic vision and rhythmic storytelling. Anchoring this iteration of the concept is a headline feature by celebrated trombonist and composer Malcolm Jiyane. To bring their collective visions to fruition, Sibiya has assembled an elite tier of musicians, featuring Nathi Mathunjwa on piano, Siphiwe Kubheka on drums, David Moagi on trumpet, and Lebogang Lamola on guitar. The repertoire is built around the original compositions of both Portia Sibiya and Malcolm Jiyane, balanced by a selection of iconic South African jazz covers that pay homage to the ancestors of the genre. The Ancestral Jazz Project stands as a powerful, fluid exploration of cultural memory, identity, and musical mastery.
