RON CHA TRIO
jazz

RON CHA TRIO’
The pianist, composer and producer Ronojit Chaliha aka Ron Cha is from Assam, India, and now lives in Amsterdam. After 15 years of classical piano education, he turned to jazz, R&B and gospel. As the first musician, he received the A.R. Rahman 100% Full Scholarship for the Berklee College of Music.
Ron Cha combines a modern, groove-oriented jazz approach with influences from soul, R&B and the music of his homeland Assam. With his album “Maati” (2022), together with singer Kalpana Patowary, guitarist Lionel Loueke and drummer Ferenc Németh, he brought together Assamese folk music and contemporary jazz for the first time in his own musical concept.
As a pianist and bandleader, Ron Cha toured Europe, Asia and the USA and worked with Lizzy McAlpine, Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Lionel Loueke, Ferenc Németh, Gregory Tardy, Stephanie McKay, Laufey, Philip Lassiter, Jasper Blom and Benjamin Herman, among others. His previous venues include the Sunset/Sunside Jazz Club Paris, Bimhuis Café Amsterdam, Sculler’s Jazz Club Boston, SXSW Austin, NCPA Mumbai and the Caux Theater in Switzerland.
In addition to his work as a musician, Ron Cha works as a composer for film and advertising and teaches piano. Since 2021 he has been a faculty member of the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music in Chennai.
With the Ron Cha Trio, he presents his music in classical trio format: contemporary jazz with great harmonious openness, pronounced groove and influences from R&B, gospel and Indian music.
„Ron Cha is the most soulful player I’ve had the privilege of hearing and working with in a long time.“
— Jacques Schwarz-Bart
„Heartfelt performance and addressed the music with emotional depth.“
— Brad Mehldau
